Route relationship
US 41 does not follow the shoreline or pass through Illinois Beach State Park. Zion is a separately routed eastward destination from the road corridor, with both the detour and the return worth planning before the Wisconsin border.
Why the stop matters
Zion can turn a drive day into a longer Lake Michigan nature chapter: shoreline, dunes and wetlands, trails, a picnic, camping, or beach time. It works best as one selected Illinois Beach State Park layer rather than a generic highway-services stop.
Northbound and southbound use
Northbound: Decide before the border whether Zion deserves dedicated time, then plan the eastward detour and return to US 41 while keeping park time separate from Wisconsin travel.
Southbound: Treat Zion as an optional nature chapter after entering Illinois. Decide whether there is time for the shoreline before Waukegan, Skokie, and Chicago, rather than describing it as an automatic next US 41 stop.
Direct corridor versus lakefront destination choices
Keep US 41, Zion, and Illinois Beach State Park separate in the plan. The park’s north and south areas, trails, campground, beach, parking, and reservations are separate choices within the nature visit—not proof that the highway follows the shore.
