Evanston is a deliberate North Shore and Lake Michigan city detour east of the current US 41/Skokie Boulevard corridor, not a current signed-US-41 mainline stop.
Route relationship
Current US 41 uses the Skokie Boulevard corridor, while Evanston’s downtown, lakefront, beaches, and university-area destinations sit east of that direct route task. Choose Evanston deliberately from the Chicago or Skokie corridor, then plan the return separately rather than assuming the route follows the shoreline or downtown streets.
Why the stop matters
Evanston offers a city-and-lakefront choice immediately north of Chicago: downtown and food, beaches and Lake Michigan, university-area time, or a transit-supported visit. It works best when the day has room for one defined layer instead of trying to combine the whole city with a through-route drive.
Northbound and southbound use
Northbound: Leave the Chicago or Skokie corridor for Evanston on purpose, choose a specific city or lakefront layer, and plan the return to US 41 separately.
Southbound: Treat Evanston as an optional city or lakefront visit before Chicago. Keep Evanston time separate from the later Chicago route and time budget; continuing through Evanston does not automatically follow US 41.
Direct corridor versus lakefront destination choices
Keep the direct US 41/Skokie Boulevard task separate from downtown Evanston, the lakefront and beaches, and university-area destinations. CTA, Metra, and Pace are their own transit-planning layer, not a substitute for the driving route. Parking and event geography also deserve their own plan when they affect the chosen stop.
Planning weight
Give Evanston the time of a selected city or lakefront destination, not the time of a roadside pause. A downtown, beach, food, university-area, or transit-supported plan can be worthwhile; trying to treat every layer as one compact stop usually makes the detour less useful.
